It’s All Worth It- Finally

In: Kids & Mom

After years of living a healthy lifestyle, teaching and promoting fitness I had a great experience recently.  I took my eldest daughter on a ski week.  This has been a work in progress, with careful family planning.  YES family planning, most of you may think that only relevant when wanting to have a child, but what do you do once you get one????

From the moment I was pregnant I knew I wanted my children to be active.   I thought back to my childhood and asked what was the first sport/activity I did with my dad and siblings- Downhill Skiing.  We all started equal at the same time- I was 4 years old and my dad was about 38- I cannot believe it now- he took all 3 children as beginners to learn to ski.  Oh and he had never been on skis himself either.    My dad saw the potential for a family activity- the playing field was equal.  My brother- not physically coordinated, my sister managed, me athletic, my dad athletic- but on the ski hill we were equals.  What great insight.  I have pursued this with my daughters to date, I started skiing with Kasia when she was 3, Ava I will start next season when she is 3.

This is a plan and a work in progress.  Shorlty after giving birth to Ava, I started taking Kasia skiing.  My fitness was low, I was drenched in sweat from hormone heat and I felt great to be outside and active again.

Obviously I pursued my physical fitness- this is my passion and my career.  Fitness for me has been more about being strong enough to be able to work more training hours, for most fitness is about looking good and feeling good.  But I GOT IT is a big way- through pursuing one goal (regaining and maintaining my fitness) it allowed me to accomplish another huge goal in my Family Plan and enjoy days of skiing with my daughter- a physical activity that for us is about sharing healthy time.  On the ski hill we are equals- she leads and I lead- it’s not a competition and mommy is not bigger or stronger than Kasia.  This is great for her self confidence and is great for my parenting confidence.

Here are some pictures of our recent holiday- Kasia is now 5 and completed a week of ski camp.  I am proud to say that this family plan is well in progress and it all began with FITNESS.

This has given me a renewed passion for health and fitness, notice I did not say performance fitness.
